Metaphor Magic in Coaching and Coaching Supervision

Metaphor Magic draws from symbolic modeling, systems theory, sandplay therapy, and Clean Language, and uses symbolic metaphors to support clients in coaching and coaching supervision. The Metaphor Magic Box contains small objects with which clients build and explore their metaphoric landscape in relation to a question, topic, or scenario. The coach or coaching supervisor facilitates a discovery-based process using direct, succinct, open-ended questions to support clients in unpacking and examining the content and context of their landscape. The underlying neuroscience and somatics of Metaphor Magic are offered, along with applications to different audiences and examples of transformational experiences of participants.

Coaching elephants

A series of cartoons for Tatiana Bachkirova's book 'Developmental Coaching: Working with the Self'. They are used to illustrate the analogy where the "rider" is the conscious mind and the "elephant" represents the whole organism (including the unconscious mind but not the conscious mind).

Strengthening Coaching: an Exploration of the Mindset of Executive Coaches using Strengths-Based Coaching

Interest in strengths-based coaching is growing, yet whilst there is evidence that focusing on strengths is beneficial, there is scant research within a coaching context and literature offers limited practical guidance. This phenomenological analysis study investigates six executive coaches’ beliefs about the practice and impact of strengths-based coaching. The findings reveal what motivates the coaches to focus on strengths, including a high sense of coach authenticity, suggesting that there might be benefits for both client and coach. The paper also discusses the coaches’ beliefs about the unique contribution to coaching outcomes and offers insights into the strengths-based coaching ‘recipe’.

AAMAI coaching democratising coaching service or offering an ersatz .pdf

‘AI coaching’: democratising coaching service or offering an ersatz?

Organisational coaching is not the only field that has recently been challenged by the extraordinary developments in artificial intelligence (AI) with a threat of replacement of human practitioners by machines. The challenges of this field, however, are unique because the nature of coaching remains fairly elusive, making comparison between human coaching and AI coaching a complicated exercise. In this paper we conceptualise the essential characteristics of organisational coaching and propose a number of criteria according to which interventions can be identified as coaching. Our conclusion is that AI ‘coaching’ (AIC) does not meet these criteria. However, in considering various genres of organisational coaching along simple model-based types, we identify a number of elements in human coaching that could be augmented to various degrees by the use of AI.

The Emotional Labour of the Coach - in and out of the coaching ‘room’

Emotional labour is the activity of maintaining an appropriate outward demeanour at work. This study employed a phenomenological approach, using conceptual encounter, to explore the under-researched emotional labour of the coach. Coaches’ experience of emotional labour has high commonality with research outcomes in other roles: impacts on authenticity, detachment, resource drain and ‘burnout’, and emotional labour was experienced both inside and outside the coaching space. These findings have implications for coaches, supervisors, educators, and professional associations for the preservation and well-being of the coach. In addition, what I have termed, commercial emotional labour has importance for coaches and organisations, and potentially beyond.
