Two second year BA Social Work students, Nadia Shakourian and Lucy Takawira recently completed their Private, Volunteer and Independent (PVI) sector placement at Bromford Support, a housing scheme for people with learning disabilities. They worked with support worker, Paula Monteiro helping her clients access the Mates ‘N’ Dates service, a specialist dating and friendship agency for adults with learning disabilities in Oxfordshire. Paula sent praise to the Agency Co-ordinator on the students’ input and professionalism.

Studies show how immigration detention has a negative impact on the mental health and wellbeing of asylum seekers. One major cause being the inadequate services and support available in detention centres in the UK. Since neither immigration detention nor adult asylum seekers are in the general remit of social workers, the purpose of this paper was to identify the gaps in social work practice in this area. A literature review was conducted to understand how a social work model of intervention can be implemented within immigration detention for asylum seekers.

The aim of this study is to identify the factors that will aid substance misusing parents to utilise social services more effectively. Using a literature review done systematically, this study argues that practitioner attitudes, support for practitioners, parental attitudes, comorbid/co-existing factors, resource and multi-disciplinary working prevents substance misusing parents (SMPs) from engaging with social workers (SWs). Practitioner attitudes as well as parental attitudes played a crucial part with effective engagement in social work practice with substance misusing parents and their families. Limited resources in the form of inconsistency in care and the lack of seamless interventions for parents affected by substance misuse were additional barriers to engagement when working with substance misusing families.
