Dr. Eric White and Dr. John Twycross (senior lecturers in American Literature and Digital Media Production, respectively), have been instrumental in bringing to life an ambitious augmented reality (AR) project called ‘The Reading Machine’
A cross-faculty Oxford Brookes research group will be launching their latest project this month. Avant-Gardes and Speculative Technology (AGAST), founded by Dr Eric White (Department of English and Modern Languages) and John Twycross (Department of Computing and Communication Technologies), will be unveiling their Reading Machine on January 24 in the JHBB special collections archive.
…and personality traits were explored when Twycross Zoo posed two questions: does primate personality affect enrichment engagement in L’Hoest’s monkeys? and how can we use this to tailor enrichment to individual animals? 420 hours of instantaneous behavioural observations were conducted from May-July 2022, and seven HPQ’s were completed by primate care staff, determining the activity budgets and personality type of each L’Hoest’s monkey. There were four hypotheses: dominant males will be first to engage with enrichment; youngest L’Hoest’s monkeys will engage with enrichment most; lowest ranking individuals will engage with surroundings less; and they would all favour feeding enrichment. Results found a significant correlation between personality and enrichment engagement. Extroverts are more likely to get stimulation from enrichment than introverted individuals. Hay bales provided all individuals with entertainment for long periods of times. Scent oils appeared to have no effect as they were not intrigued or …
An extended piano performance, a journey to imaginary worlds and images. myths & visions – a piano (& body) performance was conceived as Késia Decoté’s PhD final show. It explores the choreographic potential of the pianist’s gestures in a programme of works for piano extended techniques, which were also inspired by myths, imaginary landscapes and illusions. It combines piano performance with elements of dance, and the spectator/participant is led to walk through specific journeys within the experience of the performance, as an invitation for an alternative and more embodied experience of classical music.

This record contains the captured audio/video interactions of the AGAST project team members, with members of the general public, and the public's engagement with the topic of research. Investigation into past reading technology, while speculating how emerging technology might affect how the public interacts with reading in the future, is the intended focus of the collected data. Public exposure to previously unheard of reading technologies resulted in members of the public thinking and conveying thoughts and ideas that past pioneer's of reading technology had, in pursuit of new forms of reading... The records contained within are videos shot in local Oxford locations. AGAST attended these events to present it's research to the general public. These records contain evidence of public interactions, interviews with members of the public, public engagement with AGAST materials and displays and lectures.
