Course structure
Week 0: Induction
Wednesday 20 February – Sunday 24 February 2013
- Become familiar with Brookes Virtual and introduce yourself to the other course members
- Download and bookmark the resources listed on the course readings page, so you have them handy when you need them (they will also be linked in the weeks we use them)
- Go to the Week 0 section of this course and begin the induction activities
Time management tip
- Read the article by Hall and Sung about the different effects of language and cultural expectations, so you’re ahead of the game in the Week 2.
Week 1: Academic cultural differences
Monday 25 February – Sunday 3 March 2013
- Navigate your way around the two discussion topics
- For both topics, read messages and post your message to the right area
- Navigate your way around the course materials and resources
- Read chapters 4 and 6 in the course text book Teaching International Students, by Carroll and Ryan

- By Wednesday, sign up for a group depending on your area of interest (the groups start work in Week 2)
Week 2: Looking at language issues; teaching for inclusion
Monday 4 March – Sunday 20 March 2013
- Read Chapter 7 in the course text Teaching International Students by Carroll and Ryan
- (Re)-read the article by Hall and Sung about the different effects of language and cultural expectations
- In your small group, develop good practice guidelines for encouraging inclusion in learning and teaching activities

Week 3: Groups and group work
Monday 11 March – Sunday 17 March 2013
- Read Montgomery’s report on group work
- In your small group, work on another group’s recommendations to produce an implementation plan
- In the plenary group, contribute ideas and resources relevant to the four themes on group working
- Identify the key factors for effective, inclusive group work

Week 4: Assessment
Monday 18 March – Friday 22 March 2013
- Use a range of resources to address scenarios linked to assessment standards, feedback, and reliability in marking criteria
- Suggest ways forward
- Submit your course evaluation
