Calculating drug infusion rates

Question 1

The doctor orders a litre of 5% Dextrose with 40 mmol of KCL to infuse at 100ml/hr. Calculate the amount of KCL the patient receives in 1hr.

40mmol KCL in 1000ml

= 4 mmol KCL in 100ml

Infusion running at 100ml/hr therefore patient receives 4 mmol/hr

Question 2

A continuous infusion of dopamine of 25ml/hr was ordered for your patient. The medication comes as 400mg of dopamine in 500ml of 5% Dextrose in 0.45% Sodium Chloride. Calculate the dose of the drug in mg/hr.

400mg in 500ml

= 80mg in 100ml

= 20mg in 25ml

Infusion running at 25ml/hr therefore rate of drug is 20mg/hr

An aminophyline infusion is to run at 80ml/hr. One gram of the drug comes diluted in 1000ml of 5% Dextrose in 0.45% Sodium Chloride. Calculate the dose of the drug in mg/hr.

1g in 1000ml

= 1000mg in 1000ml

=1mg in 1ml

= 80mg/hr
