At the recent finalists’ party for English Literature, Drama and Creative Writing students, Lecturer in Creative Writing, Dr Morag Joss, was awarded this year’s Nigel Messenger Teaching Teapot Award.
The award, set up by the English team seven years ago, was voted on by all English Literature, Drama and Creative Writing students, undergraduate and postgraduate, and was named in honour of a retired colleague Nigel Messenger - an outstanding and much-loved Brookes lecturer of English Literature for many years.
Head of Department, Professor Simon Kövesi, was moved by the award of the teaching teapot. “Morag has only been with us for a short while, but she has already established herself in the hearts and minds of her students as a supremely considerate and attentive lecturer. Flooding in with the votes, the anonymous comments students submitted about Morag’s teaching were heartening to read. Indeed, the comments pouring in about all of our colleagues makes me very proud to work amongst them all. As we bid a fond farewell to this year’s graduating students, it is nice to acknowledge the core reason Brookes will remain meaningful for them: the academics who have seen them through the ups and downs of years of study.”
Receiving the award, Morag said, “I'm a relative newcomer to Brookes, so I'm especially surprised and delighted to have been awarded the famous teapot! I feel very lucky to work with exceptional colleagues in such a dynamic, supportive and encouraging department. A very big thank you to my students for such a lovely compliment, and best of luck with your end-of-semester deadlines!”
