Dr Dan Butcher is a Senior Lecturer with the Oxford School of Nursing and Midwifery at Oxford Brookes. He has been awarded a Churchill Fellowship to travel to Canada and Sweden to work with the heart failure research teams to explore the care of people living with and dying from advanced heart failure.
Dan has been a nurse for over 30 years and is passionate that people live throughout their lives, even when they and their families are coping with life-limiting illnesses. While the focus historically has been on cancer, palliative and end of life care can contribute to the lives of many more people provided both professionals and the public have a better sense of what effective end of life care involves.
He plans to begin sharing with local networks the nature of the Fellowship, its aims and objectives. This will include clinical teams in Oxfordshire (Heart Failure and Palliative Care) and the Oxford Institute for Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Research (associated with the Oxford Academic Health Sciences Network). During the travel phase, he will chronicle his experiences and share these via social media ahead of more formal dissemination on his returnHe will explore the potential of contributing to one of the UKs Advanced Palliative Care courses and/or Cardiology Training programmes. This information will also be integrated into his regular role teaching pre-registration nurses about advance care planning and chronic illness.
During his travels, Dan hopes to visit staff at the Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Research and the University Health Network in Toronto, Canada, the countries top research hospital. He will also travel to Linköping University in Sweden. In both locations, Dan will hope to meet researchers, clinicians, patients and their families and understand how they are driving forward the care and support of people living with advanced heart failure, a rapidly increasing disease facing many countries including the UK. Dan has spoken about his aims:
“I hope to make an impact on the care and support provided to people, and their families, living with advanced heart failure. Initially this will focus on Oxford and Oxfordshire but I hope this will also have a wider impact”
