Welcome to the course! This week we're starting off by experiencing, and thinking about, different kinds of course induction activities. So while you're saying 'Hello' in the arrivals lounge, filling in your profile, inventing an icebreaker and participating in other people's icebreakers, remember to take a step back occasionally and think about how the activity makes you feel, and what it's trying to accomplish. Then let us know your thoughts in the discussion forum.
You can read the video transcript here.
Activities
- Task 1: Arrivals lounge (5 minutes) Post in this forum to say hello and let us know you've arrived safely.
- Task 2: Edit your profile (10 minutes) Add a photo, tell us something about yourself, your work context, your interests.
- Task 3: Tweet your ideas about induction activities, and preparing students for online courses. While you're watching the videos, and reading and thinking about icebreakers and other induction activities, post your thoughts and experiences to Twitter using the course hashtag.
- Task 4: Icebreakers (badge activity) (no more than 2 hours in total) Design and share an icebreaker activity. Participate in someone else's activity, and think about what would make a good icebreaker in your context.
- Task 5: Share your ideas (up to 2 hours in lots of small chunks) Talk about induction, ice breakers, and preparing to learn online. Share your previous experiences of online learning and teaching, and your hopes for future ones.
