Oxford Brookes International Poetry Competition - winners announced!

The winners of Oxford Brookes’ annual International Poetry Competition, celebrating the great diversity of poetry being written in English all over the world, have been announced today (Tuesday 4 October).

Launched by The Oxford Brookes Poetry Centre in May, the competition had two top prizes of £1000 on offer.

The competition asked for poems to be submitted in two categories: ESL category (open to all poets over 18 years of age who speak English as a Second Language), and Open category (open to all poets over 18 years of age).

Dr Niall Munro, Director of Oxford Brookes Poetry Centre said: “I'm really delighted to say that the second running of the competition in 2016 was even more successful than last year! We received close to 1000 entries from over 450 different poets and the scope was truly international, with entries from over 30 countries including: Argentina, Canada, China, India, Iran, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, St Lucia, Taiwan, Turkey, and Uganda. We believe our judge, the highly acclaimed poet Daljit Nagra, has done a terrific job with his selections, and we are very grateful to him and to all who entered. Many congratulations in particular go to the winners and those poets shortlisted!"

A prize-giving ceremony will be held at Oxford Brookes University on Friday 25 November 2016, and will feature readings by the winning and shortlisted poets, and by Daljit Nagra. All are welcome to attend, and more details can be obtained from Niall Munro ( niall.munro@brookes.ac.uk).

ESL category

• Special Commendation: Luis Elvira - 'Saturday night fish fry'

Guest judge Daljit Nagra remarked on the very high standard of entries in this year's competition, and has provided details comments on each of the winning poems, which you can read on the Poetry Centre website, where you can also read the poems themselves.
