Oxford Brookes is the best university you can choose if you want to study social work, according to The Guardian University Guide, published this week.

The BA (Hons) in Social Work gives students fully qualified social worker status with the General Social Care Council (GSCC). It produces confident, resourceful and competent social workers who are qualified to work in multi-professional environments. The teaching is grounded in relevant research, and is based on input from carers and service users.

June Girvin, Dean of Brookes' School of Health and Social Care, said: "I am really pleased that the league tables reflect what we have believed about our Social Work programme in the School for a long time. We strive to continually develop and improve programmes in the School and it's very gratifying when this is publicly recognised. It's a well deserved result for the School's Social Work team."

The Guardian rates the Oxford Brookes Social Work BA particularly highly for its staff, its staff to student ratio, and its spend per student.

The degree is over three years, and includes two work placements, which are assessed by experienced social workers. Job prospects on completion are excellent, because there is a national shortage of social workers. Home students usually obtain bursaries from the GSCC, which cover their fees and may go some way towards living costs.

A few places are still available on the Social Work BA (Hons) for September 2007 start. For more information call 01865 488151, or go to www.brookes.ac.uk/studying/courses/undergraduate/2007/social

Oxford Brookes' School of Health and Social Care is a leader in its field. In addition to topping the Social Work league table, the School's Learning Disability and Mental Health Nursing programmes have recently been assessed as 'outstanding' in terms of practice and resources by the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s quality assurance process.
