Oxford Brookes University defeated Christ’s College Cambridge 185-160 in an exciting quarter final of the popular TV quiz show University Challenge.

Out of 100 teams that applied for the programme, Oxford Brookes is now one of eight remaining universities in the show that pits the brightest students in the country against one another.

The team are: captain Tony McLarin (History), Richard Williams (Architecture), Sarah Johnson, (Mathematical Sciences) and Austin Sherlaw-Johnson, studying for a PhD in Music. They are coached by Dr. Ian Bayley, senior lecturer in computing.

In the first round the Oxford Brookes team scraped a win against Cardiff University by 220-210. In the second round they thrashed the University of the Arts London with an impressive 320 points to 100.

Dr. Bayley said of the latest victory: "This is a great result against one of the country's top universities and it shows how incredibly talented our students can be."

Contestant Richard Williams added: “It has been very exciting to have been involved in University Challenge and it was a great achievement to beat one of the top Cambridge colleges on Monday. It is the first time the University has been so successful on the show and hopefully we have shown that Brookes can compete against the very best."

Because of a quirk in the contest, teams must win two quarter-final matches. So Brookes must win one more match before progressing to the semi-finals.

Watch the team’s next match on Monday February 7 on BBC2 at 8pm.
