Dame Tessa Jowell MP will deliver a lecture at Oxford Brookes today (Thursday 5 March) titled ‘The confidence to showcase London and the UK: How we dared to host the Olympic Games’.
In 2012 the nation stood tall as it hosted arguably the most memorable Games in living history.

Credited with leading London’s successful bid to host the Olympics, Dame Tessa will outline how the country won the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games bid and planned, from outset to legacy, a wide range of benefits for UK plc.
Speaking ahead of the lecture, Dame Tessa Jowell said: “I am delighted to be speaking about the London 2012 Olympic Games at Oxford Brookes, particularly as part of their 150th anniversary celebrations.
“Oxford Brookes’ wide ranging contribution to the Games had a positive impact on a number of fields within the institution such as rowing, history and design, and re-affirmed its significant place within the community.
“The 2012 Games is bound to have instilled fond memories with the University as it did with the rest of the UK.”
Oxford Brookes’ involvement in the London 2012 Olympic Games was vast and varied.
This ranged from former student Jay Osgerby designing the Olympic Torch, students and alumni winning four Olympic and two Paralympic medals and Professor John Gold’s research influencing decision making around the legacy of the Games.
Ahead of its successes in London, Oxford Brookes was already in the UK’s top five universities in terms of medal success since the Athens Olympics in 2004.
This month will also see the installation of gold medallist Katherine Grainger CBE as Brookes’ new Chancellor. The University’s current Chancellor Shami Chakrabarti CBE was one of nine carriers of the Olympic Flag during the opening ceremony of the 2012 Games, alongside Muhammad Ali and Ban Ki-Moon.
Numerous staff and students also volunteered at the Games as part of the incredibly successful Games Makers support.
Dame Tessa Jowell is the Labour MP for Dulwich and West Norwood. She first joined the House of Commons in April 1992. She was Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport 2001- 07, Minister for the Olympics and London 2007-10 and Shadow Minister (Olympics and London) 2010-12.
