Sir Christopher Paine in interview with Sir Gordon Wolstenholme

Abstract

At the start of the interview Sir Christopher Paine, now president of the Royal Society of Medicine, talks about his schooling at Eton and medical training at Oxford. After qualifying in 1961 he became interested in cancer when working with Leslie Witts at Oxford and Bodley Scott at St Bartholomew's, and he began a career in radiotherapy with his first registrar job with Frank Ellis at the Churchill Hospital in Oxford. Sir Christopher Paine then discusses his early work on haematology and malignancies, and his research on implantation techniques using needles and wires to replace radium. The interview moves on to his career in Oxford, where he was to stay until 1995. Sir Christopher reflects on his work as consultant clinical oncologist from 1970 (when Frank Ellis retired), and as director of clinical studies in the medical school from 1982 to 1985. Next, Sir Christopher speaks of his time as district general manager of Oxfordshire Health Authority from 1984 to 1988; the valuable insight he gained into various aspects of health care, and the problems of dealing with media interest in the authority. The discussion then focuses on his views on the future of cancer care, the importance of health education, the problems of health service management and funding clinical research, and his hopes for the Royal Society of Medicine in the future. The interview ends with Sir Christopher speaking about his family, and the various opportunities that a career in medicine can offer.
