Dr Ian Bayley, Senior Lecturer in Computing at Oxford Brookes won the BBC Mastermind 2011 title recently. Dr Bayley is no stranger to national Quiz titles having won BBC Radio 4's Brain of Britain competition in 2010.
Over recent years Ian has had many successes in national, European and world quiz competitions and also narrowly missed achieving the top TV and radio titles earlier, as he was runner up in Mastermind in 2009 and in Brain of Britain in 2005.
Ian also trained the Oxford Brookes University Challenge team this year which finished among the top eight teams in the country, having reached the quarter finals of the popular TV show. He has twice competed in University Challenge himself: in 1996, when he represented Imperial College, London, and again in 2000 when he reached the quarter finals as a member of the Balliol College, Oxford University team.
Ian puts his success down to his understanding of how memory works and his ability to link facts through creating mental visual images. He commented: 'I feel really good about winning the title especially as I missed out last time I entered. I am glad the perseverance paid off and that I was able to keep calm under pressure with the cameras rolling.'
