About the tutors

Mary DeaneMary Deane

Mary is an Educational Development Consultant at the Oxford Centre for Staff and Learning Developmen at Oxford Brookes University. Her specialisms include teaching writing in disciplinary contexts, promoting research and publication, enhancing curricula, and internationalisation in HE. She provides consultancy in these areas, and supervises doctoral work in the fields of academic writing, educational research, and literary studies.

Mary is the Chair of the research ‘Centre for International Curriculum Inquiry and Networking’ (CICIN). Her recent publications include Writing in the Disciplines (2011), Academic Research, Writing, and Referencing (2010), and Critical Thinking and Analysis (2010). Mary teaches on the Postgraduate Certificate of Teaching in Higher Education (PCTHE) and the Associate Teachers (AT) course. She was awarded a Teaching Excellence Award in 2008, and is an Executive Board Member of the International Writing Centers Association (IWCA) and the European Writing Centers Association (EWCA).

Marion WaiteMarion Waite

Marion is from a healthcare background with a 17 year career in the UK NHS as a nurse, midwife and health visitor prior to moving into a career in higher education.

Marion has pioneered the development of online distance learning programmes in the Faculty of Health & Life Sciences including the MSc Nursing Studies which bring together a global network of experienced nurse practitioners to collaborate using the latest teaching and learning technologies. She is also currently researching with colleagues in the Faculty of Technology, Design & Environment on developing mobile applications to support decision-making for people with diabetes.

Marion is a tutor-developer on the following OCSLD courses, #FSLT14 and #TOOC14, and has successfully written for peer-reviewed publication in academic journals and books within both the disciplines of healthcare and pedagogic research.

Marion was awarded a Brookes Teaching Fellowship in 2012 in order to lead a project aimed at supporting lecturers and students to collaboratively write for publication.
