The perceptions of parents and teachers on parental involvement in their children’s education at secondary school level and potential barriers: A scoping review

Abstract

In this study, the aim was to discover the perceptions of parents and teachers on parental involvement in their children’s education at secondary school level as well as the potential barriers to their involvements. This study adopted a scoping review method to answer wide questions pertaining to the title of this study as presented in various academic journals or literature because it (scoping review) describes existing or current literature as well as other sources of information which include various findings from several study methods and designs. A scoping review was conducted after search has been done on some databases with 16 studies that met up with the inclusion criteria. After collecting the data in a secondary form, data was charted, and a descriptive method was used in analysing the results of the charted data. The results of the study showed that both parents and teachers have good perceptions when it comes to parental involvement for students in secondary school. The study showed that different parents and educators assign different explanations to parental involvement and that there is no widely acknowledged consensus on what parental involvement is or ought to be. It was gathered that several factors; family, child, school, teacher, and social factors influence parental involvement in secondary school. Home-based parental involvement that is the most common category of parental involvement was revealed to have no correlation with students’ academic performance. Another study showed that mothers’ mean score of involvement with their children was higher than the fathers. The findings revealed various barriers affecting parental involvement in their children’s academic life. One of such was the marginalisation of parents by schools through the practice of racism and colour discrimination leading to poor communication between the school and affected parents.
