Entrepreneurial Role in Enhancing the National Economy: The Challenges and Opportunities of Social Entrepreneurship in Indonesia

Abstract

The emergence of social entrepreneurship as a solution in improving the social and environmental issue attracted academics and practitioners. Social entrepreneurship promotes social welfare and economy interest that benefit the community. This concept evolved into one of the possible solutions to maintain the economic stability of a country. Indonesian government’s efforts to increase the number of entrepreneurs raise an intense desire to understand the role of social entrepreneurship in supporting that goal. This study provides analyses of the current development of social entrepreneurships in Indonesia. The dissertation explores the country growth condition that may become an advantage for social entrepreneurs in growing the business. This paper identifies marketing, sustainability, and legality as challenges faced by social entrepreneurs in Indonesia. Furthermore, the opportunities for social entrepreneur in maximizing craft, education, and fisheries industry as resources have been evaluated in this study. Finally, this paper concludes with suggestion that the Indonesian government need to establish a policy that benefits the development of social entrepreneurship, early entrepreneurial education and training for students, and provide the right funding model as the possible room of improvement for the practice of social entrepreneurship in Indonesia.
